Vice in Go-Go Boots?  By MAUREEN DOWD Published: August 31, 2008

The guilty pleasure I miss most when I’m out slogging on the campaign trail is the chance to sprawl on the chaise and watch a vacuously spunky and generically sassy chick flick.
So imagine my delight, my absolute astonishment, when the hokey chick flick came out on the trail, a Cinderella story so preposterous it’s hard to believe it’s not premiering on Lifetime. Instead of going home and watching “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, I get to stay here and watch “Miss Congeniality” with Sarah Palin.

Sheer heaven.
It’s easy to see where this movie is going. It begins, of course, with a cute, cool unknown from Alaska who has never even been on “Meet the Press” triumphing over a cute, cool unknowable from Hawaii who has been on “Meet the Press” a lot.
Americans, suspicious that the Obamas have benefited from affirmative action without being properly grateful, and skeptical that Michelle really likes “The Brady Bunch” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” reject the 47-year-old black contender as too uppity and untested.

Instead, they embrace 72-year-old John McCain and 44-year-old Sarah Palin, whose average age is 58, a mere two years older than the average age of the Obama-Biden ticket. Enthusiastic Republicans don’t see the choice of Palin as affirmative action, despite her thin résumé and gaping absence of foreign policy knowledge, because they expect Republicans to put an underqualified “babe,” as Rush Limbaugh calls her, on the ticket. They have a tradition of nominating fun, bantamweight cheerleaders from the West, like the previous Miss Congeniality types Dan Quayle and W., and then letting them learn on the job. So they crash into the globe a few times while they’re learning to drive, what’s the big deal?

Obama may have been president of The Harvard Law Review, but Palin graduated from the University of Idaho with a minor in poli-sci and worked briefly as a TV sports reporter. And she was tougher on the basketball court than the ethereal Obama, earning the nickname “Sarah Barracuda.”

The legacy of Geraldine Ferraro was supposed to be that no one would ever go on a blind date with history again. But that crazy maverick and gambler McCain does it, and conservatives and evangelicals rally around him in admiration of his refreshingly cynical choice of Sarah, an evangelical Protestant and anti-abortion crusader who became a hero when she decided to have her baby, who has Down syndrome, and when she urged schools to debate creationism as well as that stuffy old evolution thing.
Palinistas, as they are called, love Sarah’s spunky, relentlessly quirky “Northern Exposure” story from being a Miss Alaska runner-up, and winning Miss Congeniality, to being mayor and hockey mom in Wasilla, a rural Alaskan town of 6,715, to being governor for two years to being the first woman ever to run on a national Republican ticket. (Why do men only pick women as running mates when they need a Hail Mary pass? It’s a little insulting.)

Sarah is a zealot, but she’s a fun zealot. She has a beehive and sexy shoes, and the day she’s named she goes shopping with McCain in Ohio for a cheerleader outfit for her daughter.

As she once told Vogue, she’s learned the hard way to deal with press comments about her looks. “I wish they’d stick with the issues instead of discussing my black go-go boots,” she said. “A reporter once asked me about it during the campaign, and I assured him I was trying to be as frumpy as I could by wearing my hair on top of my head and these schoolmarm glasses.”
This chick flick, naturally, features a wild stroke of fate, when the two-year governor of an oversized igloo becomes commander in chief after the president-elect chokes on a pretzel on day one.

The movie ends with the former beauty queen shaking out her pinned-up hair, taking off her glasses, slipping on ruby red peep-toe platform heels that reveal a pink French-style pedicure, and facing down Vladimir Putin in an island in the Bering Strait. Putting away her breast pump, she points her rifle and informs him frostily that she has some expertise in Russia because it’s close to Alaska. “Back off, Commie dude,” she says. “I’m a much better shot than Cheney.”

Then she takes off in her seaplane and lands on the White House lawn, near the new ice fishing hole and hockey rink. The “First Dude,” as she calls the hunky Eskimo in the East Wing, waits on his snowmobile with the kids — Track (named after high school track meets), Bristol (after Bristol Bay where they did commercial fishing), Willow (after a community in Alaska), Piper (just a cool name) and Trig (Norse for “strength.”)

“The P.T.A. is great preparation for dealing with the K.G.B.,” President Palin murmurs to Todd, as they kiss in the final scene while she changes Trig’s diaper. “Now that Georgia’s safe, how ’bout I cook you up some caribou hot dogs and moose stew for dinner, babe?”

Americans, suspicious that the Obamas have benefited from affirmative action without being properly grateful, and skeptical that Michelle really likes “The Brady Bunch” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” reject the 47-year-old black contender as too uppity and untested.

1) Maureen Dowd (born January 14, 1952) is a Washington D.C.-based columnist for The New York Times. She has worked for the Times since 1983, when she joined as a metropolitan reporter. In 1999, she was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for her series of columns on the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
Writing styles: Down’s columns are distinguished by an acerbic, often polemical writing style. Her columns often display a critical and irreverent attitude towards powerful figures such as President George W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and Pope Benedict XVI. Dowd sometimes refers to Bush as "Bubble-Boy" or simply "W." Vice President Dick Cheney is known by a variety of monikers, including "Vice", "Darth", "Shooter", "Tricky Dick Deuce", "Dr. No" and "Big Time." Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld she routinely calls "Rummy," although this is actually a nickname used by his long-time close personal friends. "Wolfie" however, is not an actual nickname used by the friends of Paul D. Wolfowitz. President George H. W. Bush, whom she covered as Times White House Correspondent, is known as "41," "Daddy" or "Poppy Bush." More recent targets of Dowd's derision include former CIA Director George Tenet, known as "Slam," or "Slam-dunk" and Cheney's chief of staff after the resignation and indictment of Scooter Libby, David Addington, who is commonly referred to as "the Black Adder." In a not-so-veiled swipe at Katie Couric Dowd frequently refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as "I'm-a-Dinner-Jacket."
Her use of many such nicknames has prompted some to parody the concept of her own book, Bushworld, by saying that it is really "Dowdworld - Enter at Your Own Risk." Another frequent Dowd motif is to catalog the popular culture influences of the public figures she profiles in her columns.

2) Unknown -

3) Unknowable from Hawaii -

4) “Meet the Press” is a weekly American television news/interview program produced by NBC. It is the longest-running television show in worldwide broadcasting history, having made its television debut on November 6, 1947. Meet the Press and similar Sunday-morning interview shows specialize in interviewing national leaders on issues of politics, economics, foreign policy and other public affairs. These shows help fulfill the obligations of the networks to provide a public service to the community.

5) be on – выходить на сцену

6) Obamas – family of Barack Obama U.S. Senator from Illinois, the 2008 Democratic nominee for President

7) Michelle - Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964) is an American lawyer and the wife of Illinois senator Barack Obama, the 2008 Democratic nominee for President.

8) “The Brady Bunch” is an American television situation comedy based around a large blended family. The show originally aired from September 26, 1969 to March 8, 1974 on the ABC network and was subsequently syndicated around the world.

9) “The Dick Van Dyke Show” is an American television situation comedy which initially aired on CBS from October 3, 1961 to June 1, 1966. The show was created by Carl Reiner and starred Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore.

10) Uppity (амер., разг.)

           1. Lifetime
Lifetime Television is an American television network devoted to movies, sitcoms and dramas,
all of which are either geared toward women or feature women in lead roles. The network is
owned by Lifetime Entertainment Services which is a joint venture between The Walt Disney
Company and Hearst Corporation. Among the most popular shows currently on the channel are
Frasier, The Golden Girls, Reba, Still Standing, and Will & Grace. The network has recently
acquired and added past episodes of Desperate Housewives, Medium, and Grey's Anatomy to its
weekend lineup. The network also airs original programming such as Strong Medicine, Intimate
Portrait, Blood Ties, and Army Wives. In addition, Lifetime airs many movies targeting to
women-both original and other networks' made for television. Lifetime Movie Network
(launched in 1998). These movies usually have frequent appearances by Meredith Baxter-
Birney, Melissa Gilbert, or Valerie Bertinelli. Aside from women's programming, the network
used to air several game shows in prime time, including Supermarket Sweep, Shop 'Til You
Drop and Debt. Lifetime also produced one original game show (Who Knows You Best?,
starring Gina St. John), with a format based on The Newlywed Game. It was cancelled after one
season. In April 2004, Lifetime launched Lifetime Radio for Women, a daily nationally
syndicated four-hour morning block mixing adult contemporary music, live caller interaction,
celebrity guests and lively discussions about the topics relating to women. Because of the
obvious feminine slant to the network's programming, Lifetime is often jokingly referred to as
The Estrogen Channel. Other comedy programs have satirized Lifetime's sometimes sentimental
programing. Family Guy once parodied their slogan, making it Lifetime: Television for Idiots.

            2. «Miss Congeniality» – «

longest-running television show in worldwide broadcasting history, having made its television debut
on November 6, 1947. Meet the Press and similar Sunday-morning interview shows specialize in
interviewing national leaders on issues of politics, economics, foreign policy and other public affairs.
These shows help fulfill the obligations of the networks to provide a public service to the community.
Meet the Press is the highest-rated of the American television Sunday morning talk shows.
The show's format consists of an extended one-on-one interview with the host and was
sometimes followed by a roundtable discussion or one-on-two interview with figures in
adversarial positions, either Congress members from opposite sides of the aisle or political

            4. «The Brady Bunch» – «
The Brady Bunch is an American television situation comedy based around a large blended family.
Mike Brady, a widowed architect with sons Greg, Peter and Bobby, married Carol Martin, whose
daughters were Marcia, Jan and Cindy. The daughters took the Brady surname. Schwartz wanted
Carol to have been a divorcée. The network objected to this, but a compromise was reached
whereby no mention was made of the circumstances in which Carol's first marriage ended, but many
assume she was widowed. The newly-formed juvenile sextet, parents Carol and Mike, Mike's live-in
housekeeper Alice, and the boys' dog Tiger settled into a large, suburban home designed by Mike. It
came at a time when divorce and remarriage in America was seeing a surge. Episodes in the first
season chronicled the family learning to adjust to its new circumstances and become a unit, as well
as typical childhood problems such as dating, rivalries and family squabbles. Subtle references to
larger social problems found their way into the dialogue from time to time.

5. «The Dick Van Dyke Show» - «Шоу Дика Ван Дайка»
The Dick Van Dyke Show is an American television situation comedy which initially aired on
CBS from October 3, 1961 to June 1, 1966. The show was created by Carl Reiner and starred
Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. Storylines deal with Rob and his two coworkers, Buddy
and Sally, who write material for the TV show. Mel Cooley, a balding straight man (and
recipient of numerous insulting one-liners from Buddy), is the show's producer and the brother-
in-law of Alan Brady, the show's seldom-seen star. As Rob, Buddy, and Sally write for a
comedy show, the premise provides a built-in forum for them to "be funny." Other stories focus
on the home life of Rob and Laura, who live at 248 Bonnie Meadow Road in suburban New
Rochelle, New York. The show included humorous but intelligent portrayals of other subjects
not previously seen on sitcoms, including religion, race, death, infidelity, and psychiatry. The
storylines gave viewers an "inside look" at how a TV show was run and written.

                                    Definition of "Guilty Pleasure" (http://dan4th.livejournal.com/575021.html)
Okay, so shay_85 made a really good point. What is a guilty pleasure? How do you define that? I
found myself having a hard time putting it into words, so I turned to one of my guilty pleasures: the
internet. Dictionary.com and Wikipedia came up blank on the concept. Google didn't acknowledge it
as a whole concept (define: guilty; define: pleasure). So I went a little further and googled "guilty
pleasure is defined as" -- and that gave me a little more.
1)"A guilty pleasure is defined as something you enjoy, even though you know it’s bad for you."
                                         Stephen Wong
2)"A Guilty Pleasure is defined as something that would ruin us if our friends knew about it."
                                        MissKendy
Both these definitions ring fairly true to me, but I think that what I define a Guilty Pleasure as is
3)"something that you enjoy that you think you shouldn't enjoy, either for personal reasons or
because of the possibility of other's reactions." That probably encompasses a bit of both of the
                                         above definitions.
more googling of various phrases yielded these web gems:
4)"A guilty pleasure is something you would listen to, but sure as hell wouldn't wear a t-shirt in
                                         public of." SolidSnakeASS
5)"A 'guilty pleasure' is that song that you never bought, the chart topper that you chased in radio
transmissions until it departed the charts" Paul Higson
6)"Anyway a guilty pleasure is lyk sumthing that you lyk but you wouldn't tell anyone." gaboC (I
will find this person and cut off their fingers... grrr)
7)"A guilty pleasure is something that I pretend to like ironically, but secretly really like" "a friend of

5. Chick flick (also "chick's flick") is slang for a film designed to appeal to a female target audience.
The term was first used in the 1980s, a decade during which chick flicks were released. Although
many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in
reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship-based (though
not necessarily romantic and may not involve men). It is typically not used for high art, feminist
subject matter, or romantic comedies intended for a wider audience. The concept of movies designed
to appeal specifically to women has existed since the early days of cinema and has been known by
other colloquial terms, including "women's pictures." However, women's films, it might be argued,
are sufficiently different in tone and content to be seen as a sub-genre of women's films. Film critic
Molly Haskell suggested that chick flicks are very different from the women's films of the 1940s and
'50s in that they now "sing a different tune." She feels that they are "more defiant and upbeat, post-
modern and post-feminist." Several chick flicks have been patterned after the story of Cinderella or
other fairy tales (e.g. The Princess Diaries, A Cinderella Story, Ever After, and Pretty Woman), or
even Shakespeare in the case of She's the Man; a large number are adapted from popular novels (e.g.
The Devil Wears Prada) and literary classics (e.g. Little Women).

     http://csi.mybb.ru/viewtopic.php?id=297&p=8

     http://love-sun.ru/friendship/comment_1216400061.html

The guilty pleasure I miss most when I’m out slogging on the campaign trail is the chance to sprawl on the chaise and watch a vacuously spunky and generically sassy chick flick.
So imagine my delight, my absolute astonishment, when the hokey chick flick came out on the trail, a Cinderella story so preposterous it’s hard to believe it’s not premiering on Lifetime. Instead of going home and watching “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, I get to stay here and watch “Miss Congeniality” with Sarah Palin.

1) slog on
корпеть, вкалывать, упорно работать (тж. slog at; slog away; slog on)

2) campaign trail

3) to sprawl on the chaise

5)сhick flick
A film that indulges in the hopes and dreams of women and/or girls. A film that has a happy, fuzzy, ridiculously unrealistic ending.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p … hick+flick

6)Cinderella
It is a popular fairy tale embodying a classic folk tale myth-element of unjust oppression/triumphant reward. Thousands of variants are known throughout the world. The title character is a young woman living in unfortunate circumstances which suddenly change to remarkable fortune. The word "cinderella" has, by analogy, come to mean one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect. The still-popular story of Cinderella continues to influence popular culture internationally, lending plot elements, allusions, and tropes to a wide variety of media.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella

8)Miss Congeniality
Miss Congeniality is a 2000 comedy/thriller film directed by Donald Petrie, starring Sandra Bullock and Benjamin Bratt. A sequel, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous was released in 2005.
Plot
Gracie Hart (Bullock) is an FBI agent who goes undercover in the fictional Miss United States scholarship program/beauty pageant in San Antonio, Texas on the lookout for a serial bomber. She is a feminist who is not traditionally attractive, and is turned into a more attractive woman going by the name of Gracie Lou Freebush, with the same tomboyish habits (ex. snorting while laughing). She is seen overreacting to a gun-toting Texan, wearing a Tyrolean for her talent competition, much to the dismay of her mentor, Victor Melling (Caine) and the director of the competition and former queen, Kathy Morningside (Bergen), and using her on-stage talent to demonstrate self-defense techniques.
In the pageant itself Hart, competing on behalf of the state of New Jersey, was tabbed to advance to the top 10, but gets through on talent alone for the rest of the pageant; she eventually placed runner up (Cheryl Frasier/Miss Rhode Island won). It is revealed at the end of the movie that Morningside and her son, Frank Morningside (gone under the name Tobin to hide his many crimes) have plotted to sabotage the pageant; they are caught after the title crown (which is rigged with a bomb) detonates at conclusion of the pageant, and Gracie is awarded "Miss Congeniality" (although The Miss Congeniality award is usually given during the pageant itself, a custom in pageants such as Miss USA and Miss Universe) and starts a relationship with her partner Eric Matthews (Bratt).

Go-Go boots are a low-heeled style of women’s fashion boot worn since the mid-sixties when fashion silhouettes focused on accentuating the leg. The term "go-go" is a 1964 back construction of the 1962 slang term "go," meaning something that was "all the rage"; the term "go-go dancer" first appeared in print in 1965.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go-go_boots

Chick flick (also "chick's flick") is slang for a film designed to appeal to a female target audience. The term was first used in the 1980s, a decade during which such chick flicks as Beaches were released. Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship-based (though not necessarily romantic and may not involve men). It is typically not used for high art, feminist subject matter, or romantic comedies intended for a wider audience (such as the 2005 film Wedding Crashers). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chick_flick

As she once told Vogue, she's learned the hard way to deal with press comments about her looks. 'I wish they'd stick with the issues instead of discussing my black go-go boots,' she said. 'A reporter once asked me about it during the campaign, and I assured him I was trying to be as frumpy as I could by wearing my hair on top of my head and these schoolmarm glasses.'
This chick flick, naturally, features a wild stroke of fate, when the two-year governor of an oversized igloo becomes commander in chief after the president-elect chokes on a pretzel on day one.

1)stick with someone/something
- to continue to be closely involved with someone or something.
2)Go-Go boots
-  low-heeled style of women’s fashion boot worn since the mid-sixties when fashion silhouettes focused on accentuating the leg. The term “go-go” refers to the fact that they were often seen on and associated with dancers at discotheques such as Whisky a Go Go.

3)frump
1. A girl or woman regarded as dull, plain, or unfashionable.
2. A person regarded as colorless and primly sedate.
[Possibly short for Middle English frumple, wrinkle, from Middle Dutch verrompelen, to wrinkle : ver-, completely; see per1 in Indo-European roots + rompelen, to wrinkle.]
4)schoolmarm
Informal
1. a woman schoolteacher
2. a woman who is old-fashioned and easily shocked by bad language or references to sex
Collins Essential English Dictionary 2nd Edition 2006 © HarperCollins Publishers 2004, 2006
- училка
5)Chick flick
1. A sentimental motion picture that appeals particularly to women.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by C. & G. Merriam Co.

6)commander in chief
Abbr. CINC or C in C
1. The supreme commander of all the armed forces of a nation.
2. The officer commanding a major armed force.
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition copyright ©2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company. Updated in 2003. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved.

7)pretzel
- a brittle salted biscuit in the shape of a knot [from German]
Collins Essential English Dictionary 2nd Edition 2006 © HarperCollins Publishers 2004, 2006
8)igloo - an Eskimo hut; usually built of blocks (of sod or snow) in the shape of a dome

5) Sarah Palin - Sarah Louise Heath Palin (pronounced /ˈpeɪlɨn/; born February 11, 1964) is the governor of Alaska and the Republican vice-presidential nominee in the 2008 United States presidential election.
She was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska, city council from 1992 to 1996 and mayor from 1996 to 2002. After an unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor of Alaska in 2002, she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 to 2004. She was elected governor of Alaska in November 2006 by defeating the incumbent governor in the Republican primary and a former two-term Democratic governor in the general election. She is the youngest person to have been elected to the position, and Alaska's first female governor.
On August 29, 2008, Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain announced he had chosen Sarah Palin as his running mate. She was nominated at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Palin is the first woman and the first Alaskan to run on the Republican Party's presidential ticket.

6) Meet the Press -  is a weekly American television news/interview program produced by NBC
Meet the Press set, November 1975.
Meet the Press began on radio in 1945 as American Mercury Presents: Meet the Press[11], a program to promote The American Mercury, a magazine that Lawrence E. Spivak had bought in 1944. Before the program aired, Spivak asked the journalist Martha Rountree, who had worked in radio and had worked for Spivak as a roving editor for the magazine, to critique the plans for the new radio show. Based on her advice, Rountree created a new radio program that she called The American Mercury, on October 5, 1945.[3]
On November 6, 1947 while still on the Mutual Broadcasting System, it was subsequently reincarnated on the NBC television network and renamed Meet the Press. The radio version also adopted the new name. Although some sources credit Mr. Spivak with the program's creation[2][5], Ms. Rountree developed the idea on her own, and Spivak joined as co-producer and business partner in the enterprise after the show had already debuted.[3]
Meet the Press was originally presented as a 30-minute press conference with a single guest and a panel of questioners. Its first hostess was its creator Martha Rountree, to date the program's only female moderator. She stepped down November 1, 1953, and was replaced by Ned Brooks, who remained as moderator until December 26, 1965. Spivak became the moderator on January 1, 1966, moving from his role as a permanent panelist. Mr. Spivak retired on November 9, 1975, and he was replaced by Bill Monroe, who stepped down on June 2, 1984.
The program then went through a series of hosts as it struggled in the ratings against ABC's This Week with David Brinkley. Roger Mudd and Marvin Kalb (as co-moderators) followed Monroe for a year, followed by Chris Wallace in 1987 and 1988, and Garrick Utley from 1989 through December 1, 1991.

7) the Obamas - Barack and Michelle Obama

8) Barack Obama - Barack Hussein Obama II (pronounced /bəˈrɑːk hʊˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə/; born August 4, 1961) is the junior United States Senator from Illinois and presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2008 general election.
Obama is the first African American to be nominated by a major political party for president.[1] A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review, Obama worked as a community organizer and practiced as a civil rights attorney before serving in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, he announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate in January 2003. After a primary victory in March 2004, Obama delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. He was elected to the Senate in November 2004 with 70% of the vote.
As a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress, he helped create legislation to control conventional weapons and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal funds. He also made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During the 110th Congress, he helped create legislation regarding lobbying and electoral fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism, and care for returned U.S. military personnel. After announcing his presidential campaign in February 2007, Obama emphasized withdrawing American troops from Iraq, energy independence, decreasing the influence of lobbyists, and promoting universal health care as top national priorities.

9) «The Brady Bunch» - The Brady Bunch is an American television situation comedy based around a large blended family. The show originally aired from September 26, 1969 to March 8, 1974 on the ABC network and was subsequently syndicated around the world.
Mike Brady (Robert Reed), a widowed architect with sons Greg (Barry Williams), Peter (Christopher Knight) and Bobby (Mike Lookinland), married Carol Martin (née Tyler) (Florence Henderson), whose daughters were Marcia (Maureen McCormick), Jan (Eve Plumb) and Cindy (Susan Olsen). The daughters took the Brady surname. Schwartz wanted Carol to have been a divorcée. The network objected to this, but a compromise was reached whereby no mention was made of the circumstances in which Carol's first marriage ended, but many assume she was widowed. The newly-formed juvenile sextet, parents Carol and Mike, Mike's live-in housekeeper Alice (Ann B. Davis), and the boys' dog Tiger settled into a large, suburban home designed by Mike.
Often erroneously cited as the first series to show a "blended" family (two series which debuted in the 1950s, Make Room For Daddy and Bonanza, had step-siblings and half-siblings respectively), it came at a time when divorce and remarriage in America was seeing a surge. Episodes in the first season chronicled the family learning to adjust to its new circumstances and become a unit, as well as typical childhood problems such as dating, rivalries and family squabbles and the fact that their house had two bedrooms for six children.
Subtle references to larger social problems found their way into the dialogue from time to time. In one social-issue episode, season two's "The Liberation of Marcia Brady," Marcia explores the oppression of the Brady women and sets out to prove a girl can do anything a boy can. The boys find this very upsetting and Peter finds himself joining the Sunflower Girls, Marcia's club, in hopes of making her back down from her 'bad idea'.
Mike did much of his architectural work in an office/design studio within the house, an apparent way of lending some realism to the way in which sitcom dads seem to be almost always at home while nonetheless earning a good living. In the episodes where he was shown in his away-from-home office, he often came home from work about the same time the children got home from school.

10) «The Dick Van Dyke Show» - The Dick Van Dyke Show is an American television situation comedy which initially aired on CBS from October 3, 1961 to June 1, 1966. The show was created by Carl Reiner and starred Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. Reiner had in fact starred in the original, unsuccessful pilot episode, Head of the Family (this was seen on the Nick at Nite service of the Nickelodeon cable channel, shortly after the series itself was added to its schedule in the 1990s). After its rejection, Sheldon Leonard took an interest and helped Reiner revive the project, convincing him to recast, and to switch to the three-camera/studio audience production format.
Totalling 158 episodes and five seasons, the show was also produced by Reiner, who wrote many episodes and played the role of Alan Brady. Reiner based the main character on himself and the Brady character on his former boss Sid Caesar. Many of the show's plots were inspired by Reiner's experiences as a writer for Your Show of Shows (which starred Caesar). The Dick Van Dyke Show was the recipient of 15 Emmy Awards.

11) Jhon McCain - John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona and presidential nominee of the Republican Party in the 2008 presidential election.

13) Rush Limbaugh - Rush Hudson Limbaugh III (born January 12, 1951) is an American radio host and conservative political commentator. His nationally-syndicated talk show, The Rush Limbaugh Show, airs throughout the United States on Premiere Radio Networks. He has been credited with reviving AM radio in the United States, and is also considered to be a "national precinct captain" for the Republican Party's Congressional victories in 1994.[2] The National Review magazine, in a 1993 cover story, called him "The Leader of Conservative Principles " during the Clinton administration

14) Dan Quale - was Vice President of the United States from 1989 to 1993. Mocked because of the "potatoe" spelling scandal. On Saturday Night Life he was often portrayed as a pre-adolescent boy.
15) W. - Originally titled Bush, W. is about the life and presidency of current (as of 2008) president George W. Bush. The "W" stand for his middle name "Walker."
16) The Harvard Law Review - The Harvard Law Review is a student-run organization whose primary purpose is to publish a journal of legal scholarship. The Review comes out monthly from November through June and has roughly 2,000 pages per volume. The organization is formally independent of the Harvard Law School. Student editors make all editorial and organizational decisions and, together with a professional business staff of three, carry out day-to-day operations. A circulation of about 8,000 enables the Review to pay all of its own expenses.

17) The University of Idaho - Since 1889, the University of Idaho has been a place that expects more from itself, more from its students, more from knowledge and more from life.
They offer a distinctive combination of outstanding majors and graduate programs, accomplished faculty, world-class facilities, renowned research and a residential campus in a spectacular natural setting. It's no wonder we're ranked among the top national universities in the country (U.S. News & World Report). We're also one of the best values in higher education (The Princeton Review).

18) «Sarah Barracuda» - Sarah Palin, 44, is known as “Sarah Barracuda,” a nickname that goes back to her days as an aggressive basketball player.

1) Geraldine Anne Ferraro (born August 26, 1935) is an attorney and a Democratic politician and a former member of the United States House of Representatives. She was the first female Vice-Presidential candidate representing a major American political party.
Ferraro grew up in New York and became a teacher and lawyer. In 1974 she joined the Queens County District Attorney's Office, where she headed the new Special Victims Bureau that dealt with sex crimes, child abuse, and domestic violence. She was elected to Congress in 1978, where she rose rapidly in the party hierarchy while focusing on legislation to bring equity for women in the areas of wages, pensions, and retirement plans. In 1984, former Vice President and Presidential candidate Walter Mondale selected Ferraro to be his running mate in the upcoming election. In doing so she also became the only Italian American to be a major-party national nominee. The positive polling Mondale received when she joined him did not last until November, and they were defeated in an electoral landslide by incumbent President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H. W. Bush.
She ran two campaigns for a seat in the United States Senate in 1992 and 1998, but twice lost the nomination of her party in the primaries. She served as a United States Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights from 1993 until 1996 in the Presidential administration of Bill Clinton. She has also continued her career as a journalist, author, and businesswoman, and served in the 2008 presidential campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Critic John Leonard called Northern Exposure "the best of the best television in the past 10 years."
The show started as an eight-episode summer replacement series on CBS in 1990.[2][3] It returned for seven more episodes in spring 1991, then became a regular part of the network's schedule in 1991-92, 1992-93, and 1993-94, three seasons in which the show was among the top 20 in the ratings.[4] Its last season, 1994-95, included a gap during May sweeps when CBS broadcast other programming.

1) Geraldine Ferraro - Geraldine Anne Ferraro (born August 26, 1935) is an attorney and a Democratic politician and a former member of the United States House of Representatives.

2) Maverick is an Academy Award nominated 1994 comedy Western movie, based on the 1950s television series Maverick, created by Roy Huggins. The film was directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay by William Goldman and features Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, and James Garner. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
The story, set in the American Old West, is a first-person account by a wisecracking gambler Bret Maverick (Mel Gibson), of his misadventures on the way to a major five-card draw poker tournament. Besides wanting to win the poker championship for the money, he also wants to prove, once and for all, that he is "the best". However, complications keep getting in the way.

It is named after John Langdon Down, the British doctor who described the syndrome in 1866. The disorder was identified as a chromosome 21 trisomy by Jérôme Lejeune in 1959. The condition is characterized by a combination of major and minor differences in structure. Often Down syndrome is associated with some impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth as well as facial appearance. Down syndrome can be identified during pregnancy or at birth.
Individuals with Down syndrome tend to have a lower than average cognitive ability, often ranging from mild to moderate developmental disabilities. A small number have severe to profound mental disability. The incidence of Down syndrome is estimated at 1 per 800 to 1,000 births, although these statistics are heavily influenced by the age of the mother. Other factors may also play a role.
Many of the common physical features of Down syndrome also appear in people with a standard set of chromosomes. They may include a single transverse palmar crease (a single instead of a double crease across one or both palms, also called the Simian crease), an almond shape to the eyes caused by an epicanthic fold of the eyelid, upslanting palpebral fissures (the separation between the upper and lower eyelids), shorter limbs, poor muscle tone, a larger than normal space between the big and second toes, and protruding tongue. Health concerns for individuals with Down syndrome include a higher risk for congenital heart defects, gastroesophageal reflux disease, recurrent ear infections, obstructive sleep apnea, and thyroid dysfunctions.
Early childhood intervention, screening for common problems, medical treatment where indicated, a conducive family environment, and vocational training can improve the overall development of children with Down syndrome. Although some of the physical genetic limitations of Down syndrome cannot be overcome, education and proper care will improve quality of life.[1]

Critic John Leonard called Northern Exposure "the best of the best television in the past 10 years."[2]
The show started as an eight-episode summer replacement series on CBS in 1990.[2][3] It returned for seven more episodes in spring 1991, then became a regular part of the network's schedule in 1991-92, 1992-93, and 1993-94, three seasons in which the show was among the top 20 in the ratings.[4] Its last season, 1994-95, included a gap during May sweeps when CBS broadcast other programming. 1. Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman nominated by a major political power as its candidate for Vice President of the United States.
A teacher and then attorney, Ferraro worked in the Queens, New York District Attorney's office, where she started the Special Victims Bureau. Ferraro ran successfully for Congress from New York City's 9th District in 1978. There, she was a women's and human rights advocate, working for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, sponsoring the Women's Economic Equity Act ending pension discrimination against women, and seeking greater job training and opportunities for displaced homemakers.
In 1984, Ferraro was picked to run as Vice President of the United States on the Democratic Party ticket, with former Vice President Walter Mondale as the candidate for President. In her acceptance speech, she spoke of the realization of the American dream: "Tonight, the daughter of an immigrant from Italy has been chosen to run for vice president in the new land my father came to love..." The ticket lost, but Ferraro's candidacy forever reshaped the American political and social landscape.
Geraldine Feraro, the first woman to be nominated for vice-president by major political party, sympathises with Sarah Palin
Geraldine Ferraro is better qualified than most to understand what it feels like to be in Sarah Palin’s shoes, having been, back in 1984, the first woman to be nominated by a major political party for vice-president. That it has taken almost a quarter of a century for either the Democrats or the Republicans to try again says much about the role of women in US politics and about her own chequered experiences. Ms Ferraro, 73, told The Times: “I had been hoping I wouldn’t be the last,” even though – as a lifelong Democrat – “it would be astounding if I did not end up voting for the Barack Obama-Joe Biden ticket.”

9. Creationism is the religious belief that humanity, life, the Earth, and the universe were created in their original form by a deity (often the Abrahamic God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam) or deities.[1] In relation to the creation-evolution controversy the term creationism (or strict creationism) is commonly used to refer to religiously-motivated rejection of evolution as an explanation of origins.[2]
Such beliefs include young Earth creationism, proponents of which believe that the days in Genesis Chapter 1 are 24 hours in length, while Old Earth creationism accepts geological findings and other methods of dating the earth and believes that these findings do not contradict the Genesis account, but reject evolution. The term theistic evolution has been coined to refer to beliefs in creation which are more compatible with the scientific view of evolution and the age of the Earth. Alternately, there are other religious people who support creation, but in terms of allegorical interpretations of Genesis
In the United States, more than in the rest of the world, creationism has become centered in the political controversy over creation and evolution in public education, and whether teaching creationism in science classes conflicts with the separation of church and state. Currently, the controversy comes in the form of whether advocates of the Intelligent Design movement who wish to "Teach the Controversy" in science classes have conflated science with religion.[23]
In such political contexts, creationists argue that their particular religiously-based origin belief is superior to those of other belief systems, in particular those made through secular or scientific rationale. Political creationists are opposed by many individuals and organizations who have made detailed critiques and given testimony in various court cases that the alternatives to scientific reasoning offered by creationists are opposed by the consensus of the scientific community

43. With McCain atop Republican ticket, talk shifts to spot no. 2

Now that Senator John McCain is headed to the nomination, he can begin thinking seriously about perhaps the most important decision he will have to make as the Republican presidential nominee: the selection of a running mate.
McCain and several senior campaign advisers insist that there is no short list of names, and no process to help him make his choice — merely a process to find a process. He directed his campaign to study past methods.
"If I win tonight, we will sit down tomorrow or the next day, whatever it is, and say, O.K., what's the process that you are recommending that we start into, and that will be the first step," McCain said on his bus Tuesday as it rolled through Dallas.
McCain said he was particularly interested in learning "what other processes were used in previous selections of the vice president, and, frankly, the ones that seemed to come out with a good product and those that maybe did not."
The choice of a running mate is always important, but it may be particularly so in McCain's case, given that, at 71, he is seeking to become the oldest candidate ever elected to a first term as president.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain's selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate has shaken up the U.S. presidential race in some unexpected ways. VOA national correspondent Jim Malone has more from Washington.

This week the McCain campaign rumbled into the key battleground state of Ohio, riding on a crest of recent public opinion polls that show Senator McCain either pulling even or moving ahead of his Democratic opponent, Senator Barack Obama.
Leading the way for McCain is his vice presidential running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
Palin carries out the traditional duty of introducing McCain during campaign stops, but it is clear the large crowds are just as eager to see her as they are the Republican presidential nominee.
"He is too humble to say this on his own behalf, so let me say it for him," she said. "There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you, and that man is Senator John McCain!"
Since last week's Republican convention, the McCain-Palin ticket has enjoyed a major boost in the polls, and the Palin selection seems to have sparked new enthusiasm for the Republican ticket.
Senator McCain now casts the Republican ticket as one primarily focused on bringing change and reform to Washington.
"My friends, I am so honored to be introduced by Governor Sarah Palin today," he said. "But I cannot wait to introduce her to Washington, D.C. and the big spenders!"
Like most Americans, the Obama campaign seemed caught off guard by Palin's selection.
Obama's vice presidential running mate, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware, says the Republicans have done a good job so far of sheltering her from inquisitive reporters.
"Sarah Palin eventually is going to have to do what I do," he said. "She is going to have to go on 'Meet the Press' like I do and have them come at her like they come at me. She is going to have to answer questions. She is going to have to say where she is going to take America and she is going to have to defend her record."

“Miss Congeniality”-a movie made by Donald Petrie in 2000.Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) is an FBI agent with a reputation for being aggressive and hard-nosed, who has long wanted to duplicate the career of her deceased mother, also an FBI agent, who died in the line of duty. Her cantankerous nature, though, has made her few friends, excepting her trusting, sensitive partner Eric Matthews (Benjamin Bratt). However, her true abilities are put to the test when she is called upon to infiltrate a Miss United States pageant after a terrorist threatens to bomb it. Gracie, who prides herself on her toughness, must now feminize her behavior to effectively participate in the pageant with the aid of Victor Melling (Michael Caine), a pompous consultant who dreams of whisking away Gracie's past self and creating "Gracie Lou Freebush" for an appreciative, all-American audience. After her arduous conversion, Gracie must play the role of beauty queen and FBI agent, and try not to blow her undercover outfit. Miss Congeniality, which was produced by star Bullock, features television stalwarts William Shatner and Candice Bergen in supporting roles. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide
“Cinderella”- a story about a girl which is living happily with her mother and father until her mother dies. Cinderella's father remarries a cold, cruel woman who has two daughters, Drizella and Anastasia. When the father dies, Cinderella's wicked stepmother turns her into a virtual servant in her own house. Meanwhile, across town in the castle, the King determines that his son the Prince should find a suitable bride and provide him with a required number of grandchildren. So the King invites every eligible maiden in the kingdom to a fancy dress ball, where his son will be able to choose his bride. Cinderella has no suitable party dress for a ball, but her friends the mice, lead by Jaques and Gus, and the birds lend a hand in making her one, a dress the evil stepsisters immediately tear apart on the evening of the ball. At this point, enter the Fairy Godmother, the pumpkin carriage, the royal ball, the stroke of midnight, the glass slipper, and the rest, as they say, is fairy tale history.

The movie ends with the former beauty queen shaking out her pinned-up hair, taking off her glasses, slipping on ruby red peep-toe platform heels that reveal a pink French-style pedicure, and facing down Vladimir Putin in an island in the Bering Strait.
