President-elect Barack Obama hit the links in Hawaii on Sunday with an aide, Eugene Kang.

WAIMANALO, Hawaii – President-elect Barack Obama spent more than five hours on the rolling Olomana Golf Links here on Sunday afternoon, playing 18 holes against the panoramic backdrop of the Ko’olau Mountain Range.

There was no word on Mr. Obama’s score or any of the scores in the foursome, which included two friends and an aide who is along on Mr. Obama’s holiday vacation to Hawaii.
But halfway through his round, as Mr. Obama stopped by the snack bar, he unexpectedly bumped into a small group of reporters sitting outside the club house. Asked how his game was going, he smiled and conceded, “I’m not that good.”
He chatted for a moment, telling the traveling press pool to have a beer and put it on his tab. No one took him up on the offer.
As for Mr. Obama and his group, a snack bar clerk later confirmed that he purchased two hot dogs, two spam musubi, two passion orange sodas, one Powerade and one coke, for a tab of $17.75. The spam musubi, a local luncheon specialty, consists of spam and a fried egg on a bed of rice, all held together with a dried seaweed wrap. (Visualize a very big sushi role, slightly larger than a Hostess Ho Ho.)
The public golf course was located in the Windward community of Waimanalo, about 20 minutes from Waikiki. It is a challenging 18-hole, par-72 course.
Before starting his round, he stepped up to the driving range and stretched for several minutes, putting the club behind his back and bending over slowly. He hit several practice drives, the first going far off to the right, with the following shots straightening out and growing in distance.
“He’s a lefty!” said one man, who was peering through the fence to catch a glimpse of Mr. Obama.
Mr. Obama, wearing black shades, a white polo shirt, light-brown cargo shorts, short white socks and golf shoes, was playing the first of what is expected to be several games of golf during his 13-day vacation in his native Hawaii. When he arrived at the course, he encountered for the first time the small group of reporters traveling with him.
He smiled briefly as he walked past, making small talk. As photographers snapped dozens of pictures, his smile fell.
“O.K. guys, come on,” Mr. Obama said. “How many shots do you need?”

1. Barack Hussein Obama II (pronounced /bəˈrɑːk hʊˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə/; born August 4, 1961) is the President-elect of the United States. The first African American to be elected President of the United States, Obama was the junior United States Senator from Illinois from 2005 until he resigned on November 16, 2008, following his election to the Presidency. His term of office as the forty-fourth U.S. president will begin on January 20, 2009.
He is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Obama worked as a community organizer and practiced as a civil rights attorney in Chicago before serving three terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. Following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, Obama was elected to the Senate in November 2004. Obama delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004.
As a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress, Obama helped create legislation to control conventional weapons and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal funds. He also made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During the 110th Congress, he helped create legislation regarding lobbying and electoral fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism, and care for U.S. military personnel returning from combat assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2. Eugene Kang
Eugene Kang is a political adviser to president-elect Barack Obama. He was the Call Time Manager for the non-profit Obama for America, one of fourteen members of the Obama Exploratory Committee, and created Obama's website for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.1
1.    Born: about 1984, Ann Arbor, Michigan1
2.    Ethnicity: First generation Korean-American2
3.    Both Kang's parents were born in Korea2
4.    Education: BA English and Philosophy, 2006, University of Michigan2
5.    Ran unsuccessfully for Ann Arbor city council in 20053
At 21, Kang ran for city council against Stephen Rapundalo, a well-experienced former Republican mayoral candidate who switched sides to represent Ward 2.2
Kang's campaigned that he had a perspective that wasn't then included in the city council--the student voice. He supported affordable housing options and opposed raising taxes; but was beaten by 90 votes out of 1,000 cast.2 3
3. Olomana Golf Links features an 18 hole, par 72 golf course that provides unparalleled vistas of the Ko'olau Mountain Range, challenging holes accented by inviting water hazards, cavernous sand traps, undulating topographical conditions and several signature holes. The Pro Shop and Sakura Restaurant are housed in a Clubhouse that bring back memories of "Old Hawaii." The helpful staff and friendly kama'aina atmosphere will make you feel right at home which is why Olomana Golf Links is recognized as one of Oahu's premier local golf venues serving all of Hawaii's residents and visitors.
The name "Olomana" can be translated in many ways. Some have translated the word as a "camel" (olo) with "staying power" (mana). The twin peaked land formation of the neighboring Mount Olomana has been described as the "powerful shoulders" of a giant who possessed supernatural powers that enabled him to perform great deeds. Mere mortals who play at Olomana today have been inspired to perform "great deeds" of their own with the great scores they shoot. Above all, the golf course offers a challenge of skills and yet a fun experience for all levels of players.
The Mizuno family has owned and operated Olomana Golf Links since 1981, Jake Mizuno is the current President.

5. Koʻolau Range is a name given to the fragmented remnant of the eastern or windward shield volcano of the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. It is not a mountain range in the normal sense, because it was formed as a single mountain called Koʻolau Volcano (koʻolau means "windward" in Hawaiian, cognate of the toponym Tokelau). What remains of Koʻolau is the western half of the original volcano that was destroyed in prehistoric times when the entire eastern half—including much of the summit caldera—slid cataclysmically into the Pacific Ocean. Remains of this ancient volcano lie as massive fragments strewn nearly 100 miles over the ocean floor to the northeast of Oʻahu. The modern Koʻolau mountain forms Oʻahu's windward coast and rises behind the leeward coast city of Honolulu — on its leeward slopes and valleys are located most of Honolulu's residential neighborhoods.

The volcano is thought to have first erupted on the ocean floor more than 2.5 million years ago. It eventually reached sea level and continued to grow in elevation until about 1.7 million years ago, when the volcano became dormant. The volcano remained dormant for hundreds of thousands of years, during which time erosion ate away at the initially smooth slopes of the shield-shaped mountain; and the entire mass subsided considerably. The highest elevation perhaps exceeded 3000 m (10,000 ft), although today it is only 960 m (3149 ft; Puʻu Konahuanui).
After hundreds of thousands of years of dormancy, Koʻolau volcano began to erupt again. Some thirty eruptions over the past 500,000 years or so have created many of the landmarks around eastern Oʻahu, such as Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Koko Head, Punchbowl Crater, Tantalus, and Āliapaʻakai. Geologists do not always agree on the dates of these more recent eruptions, some dating them to around 32,000 years ago, others to as recently as 10,000 years ago. Geologists believe that there is at least a remote possibility that Koʻolau volcano will erupt again.
6. The island of Oahu was formed by two volcanoes, the Waianae Volcano in the west and the Koolau Volcano in the east. The Waianae Volcano formed the western third of Oahu and the Koolau Volcano formed the eastern two thirds of the island.

The Koolau Volcano began forming a few million years after the Waianae Volcano, forming a separate island a few miles to the east of Waianae. The two volcanoes continued erupting until they gradually filled the ocean between them with land and became one island. After the Waianae Volcano became dormant lava flows from the Koolau volcano formed the Schofield Plateau between them. Cinder cones, tuff rings and spatter cones from the Koolau Volcano formed some of Oahu's most well-known landmarks including Diamond Head Crater, Hanauma Bay, Koko Head, Koko Crater, Punchbowl Crater, and Mount Tantalus.

The Koolau Mountain Range is about 37 miles long and its highest peak rises to 3150 feet.
7. Windward Coast – это прибрежный район, протянувшийся примерно на 70 км, начинается с Laie на севере и тянется до Mokapu Point на юге.
Город лежит на 12-мильном прибрежном отрезке, с трех сторон ограниченном горной грядой Koolau.

8. Spam musubi is a very popular snack and luncheon food in Hawaii made in the tradition of Japanese onigiri, also known as a musubi. A Spam musubi is composed of a block of salted (not vinegared; that would be sushi) rice with a slice of Spam (cooked or uncooked) on top, and typically nori (dried seaweed) surrounding it to keep it in shape.
A slice of Spam is placed onto a block of rice and a piece of nori (dried seaweed) is wrapped around the Spam-rice combination to hold it together. Although musubi resembles nigiri sushi, its rice is not treated with vinegar and is not considered to be a form of sushi, since the requirement for sushi is rice being covered with a vinegar-based mixture.
Although Spam is criticized as being "mystery meat", the Spam musubi in Hawaii has become a classic treat that is recommended by many locals. An optional ingredient to the Spam musubi is a teriyaki sauce that adds depth to the treat. It is also optional to add tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette), shoyu (soy sauce), as well as furikake (seasoning) to the rice. Some people cook spam in jelly as well.
Spam musubi is appreciated for its taste and portability. A single musubi, usually wrapped in cellophane, can be purchased at small deli-type convenience stores (including 7-Eleven stores) all over the Hawaiian islands, ranging in price between one and two dollars. The 7-Eleven stores include a wide variety of flavors, including a regular Spam musubi, a Deluxe Spam musubi (with Furikake) Spam musubi rice molds are available at many kitchen stores in Hawaii. These molds are a few inches deep with a width and breadth that matches a slice of Spam. Frugal people can also cut both ends off a small Spam can, to the same effect. Onigiri (御握り; おにぎり?), also known as Omusubi (御結び; おむすび?), is a snack of Japanese rice formed into triangle or oval shapes and often wrapped in nori (edible seaweed). Traditionally, the onigiri is filled with pickled ume fruit (umeboshi), salted salmon, katsuobushi, or any other salty or sour ingredient. In practice, pickled filling is used for preservation of the rice. Since the onigiri is one of the most famed and popular snacks in Japan, most convenience stores in Japan stock onigiri in many popular fillings and tastes. There are even specialized shops offering only handmade rice balls for take out.
Onigiri is not a form of sushi, despite common misconception. While onigiri is made with plain rice (perhaps lightly salted), sushi is made of rice with sugar and vinegar added. Onigiri is merely a method of making rice portable and easy to eat, while sushi originated as a way of preserving fish.
Onigiri are also found in many convenience stores in Taiwan and South Korea. In the latter, it is called samgak gimbap (삼각김밥) because of its triangular shape.
9. Спэм-мусуби (Spam musubi) – рисовый шарик с мясными консервами, обернутый ленточкой из водоросли нори.
10. A driving range is an area where golfers can practice their swing. It can also be a recreational activity itself for amateur golfers or when enough time for a full game is not available. Many golf courses have a driving range attached and they are also found as stand alone facilities, especially in urban areas. They are typically run by businesses or sometimes by universities [1]. Distances are usually marked by target greens at regular distances. Golfers pay for large bucket of balls (30-200 balls) and hit at their leisure. Often there are golf professionals available to give lessons and instruction. Balls are retrieved by a specialty cart with a brush and roller attachment that automatically picks up balls and a cage that protects the driver from incoming balls. In urban and suburban areas, large nets protect surrounding people and structures from errant balls. Driving ranges are particularly popular in Japan where golf courses are overcrowded and often very expensive. Many commercial driving ranges are seen in conjunction with other sports related practice areas such as batting cages, miniature golf.
